Purpose of the Study
Your child is invited to participate in a research study examining how students continue civic learning after participating in Civics Matters programs, including the Civics Matters Summit, the Washington, D.C. Trip, and the Civics Matters Alumni Network. The purpose of this study is to understand how students interpret their experiences over time and how continued support structures, such as the Alumni Network, may influence their engagement in civic or community activities after participation.
Why Your Child Was Invited
Your child is being invited to participate because they participated in the Civics Matters Summit, the Washington, D.C. Trip, or both experiences and have been invited to join the Civics Matters Alumni Network.
Procedures
If you provide permission, your child may:
- Complete an online survey about their experiences after participating in Civics Matters programs
- Spend approximately 10–15 minutes completing the survey
- Optionally volunteer to participate in a follow-up interview lasting approximately 45–60 minutes
If your child chooses to participate in the interview:
- The interview will be audio recorded to ensure accuracy
- The recording will be transcribed for research purposes
- Participation in the interview is completely optional, and your child may choose whether or not to volunteer at the end of the survey
Audio recordings and transcripts will be stored securely and only accessible to the research team
Voluntary Participation
Participation in this study is completely voluntary. Your child may choose not to participate or may stop participation at any time without penalty. Participation in this research will not affect your child’s involvement in Civics Matters programs, eligibility for opportunities, or any recognition.
Risks and Discomforts
The risks associated with this study are minimal. Your child may be asked to reflect on their experiences and perspectives. They may skip any questions they do not wish to answer.
Benefits
There are no direct benefits to your child. However, this study may help improve civic learning programs and better support students in continuing their civic engagement over time.
Confidentiality
Your child’s responses will be kept confidential.
- Survey responses will not be shared with Civics Matters staff in a way that identifies your child
- If your child volunteers for an interview, identifying information will be stored separately from survey responses
- Pseudonyms will be used in all reports or publications
All data will be stored securely and only accessible to the research team.
Consent and Access to Survey
Because participants are minors, your consent is required before your child can access the survey.
Only students for whom parent or guardian consent has been received will be given access to participate in the study.
